What is the program?
Youths ages 5-16 can earn membership in the Youths for Sarpy Habitat
Award by completing a four-part program that involves learning about
Habitat, helping Habitat, reflecting on the activity through art, and
celebrating their accomplishment by sharing their art with Sarpy
Habitat. We will present each youth participant who earns
award
participation with a certificate.
How can someone get started?
Each young person should discuss with an adult sponsor which activities
they wish to perform. An adult sponsor is someone who will witness the
Habitat activities that the young person participates in. An adult
sponsor can be a parent, guardian, troop leader, etc. To get started,
view the Youths for Sarpy Habitat Award Participation requirements. For some
tasks the adult/young person pair or group will need to make prior
arrangements (this is noted with a * on the activities list) with the
Habitat staff.
Why are none of the activities helping
to build the homes? Youth under 16 are not allowed on the
job site while work is being preformed.
Why did you start this program?
Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County is committed to involving youth in
solving the important problem of poverty housing. This program gives
youth a more organized way to be involved.
Can the young person use this for
community service for school or service clubs? Yes, as
long as the form has been filled out and the hours verified by the adult
sponsor.
What if there is a group who wishes
to volunteer? If you have a group of young folks, then it
is probably best to plan activities where most of the tasks can be
accomplished away from the job site (for example, making snacks and then
bringing them to the site).
What’s
this about posting art on your web site?
We may post the youth’s (paintings, drawings, writing) on our web site.
We will only identify the young person by their first name and last
initial to protect their privacy.
What's in a
Habitat for Humanity of Sarpy County
Youth Packet? The youth packet is for children who the
packet includes a Habitat crossword puzzle, Habitat coloring sheet,
Habitat word search, “Adventures of Habicat” flyer, and the instructions
and template to build a 3-D Habitat house out of paper (scissors and
glue needed). To get a copy of the youth packet call 292-6560 or stop by
